This is a story about a rather extraordinary lady who lives in a beautiful cottage. Her house is called Timbers, and it lays in the middle of the meadows.
Her name is Lin, but she is better known as Madam Pompom.
One morning in April all the inhabitants of the nearby village called Village of Boredom, are peeking trough their front windows. They want to know what is making such a noise. It is making them very grumpy because every minute of every day has to be exactly the same and by the same they mean un-di-sturbed. The sun isn't even up yet, the people are rubbing the sleep out of their eyes to see clearly:
It is Madam Pompom's car that is making the rattling noise. She's driving very fast and dodgy, like she's lost control over the steering wheel. Luckily the road is wide. The noise is coming from inside of the vehicle but it is impossible to see what it is: hundreds of pompoms are dangling in front of the windows. When she reaches the market square the car jolts to a stop. The noise becomes silent. The door flings open and out roll a few big purple pompoms followed by Madam Pompom herself. She is wearing a coat made of Pompoms. It is draped around her shoulders and it drags along the ground.
"Did you know, Village of Boredom, that I am really bored with your boring little talks and boring houses and boring pictures on Facebook and boring Tweets and boring days and boring nights?!" She yells into the morning air. Everyone raises their eyebrows and opens their mouthes in shock. They all think the same: how dare she interrupt the morning silence, the beginning of another fine day in the Village of Boredom?
Madam Pompom doesn't stop there. She hurries to the boot of the car and unleashes it's lock. Out come thousands and thousands of handmade pompoms in all kinds of colours and sizes. They bounce and roll and spread until the whole market square is covered by colourful balls. Madam Pompom stands in the middle of the fluffy sea and beams:
"So I have decided to cheer you all up, have a laugh with you all, make your boring faces smile and inspire your sleeping minds to look up into the blue sky! You may think I am crazy, I am! I don't care...at all really. This is my gift to you, before I go home to my lovely house and start my new project: cutting glass bottles!"
That explains the rattling noise that awoke everyone in the first place. Now that all the pompoms are on the market square you can see inside her car: it is stacked with empty bottles. The people of Boredom Village don't know what to do besides gasp at Madam Pompom who drives of in her noisy car, across the market square through the bouncing balls.
Everyone in the Village of Boredom takes in a few pompoms to clear the market square. Which means that everyone adds a little colour to their dreary homes that day.
